Kanayo O. Kanayo, a renowned Nollywood actor, has urged the Catholic Church to reconsider its use of black smoke to signify a failed papal election.
In an Instagram video, Kanayo examined the symbolism behind the smoke signals used during the papal conclave, where black smoke denotes failure and white smoke indicates success.

Kanayo posited that the persistent linking of “black” with failure reinforces subconscious racial prejudice. He proposed that the Church use “blue smoke” to signify an unsuccessful election, while retaining white smoke to announce success.
Kanayo stressed that symbolism is crucial, especially in a global institution like the Catholic Church, whose traditions impact billions.
His remarks have generated a broad online debate, with some backing the call to reassess the use of long-standing symbols that may inadvertently perpetuate negative associations with the color black.

Hello friends, the entire Catholic community has been expectant on the election of a new Pope and the Cardinals have gone into their conglomerate to do that. So yesterday what happened was that the news broke that the Cardinals failed to elect a new Pope and what that meant was that black smoke came from the chimney so when they fail is black smoke when they succeed is white smoke so this has been ingrained in the minds of the world that black is failure.
