MY 2025 TGMA RECAP
(1) After 25 years, I have resolved that the TGMA will always be an all-night service. I won’t even complain about timing again. I get tired, I go home. You get tired, you sleep.
(2) The whole arrangement of going to check tickets at the forecourt of the State House, move to the foyer of the AICC for red carpet, before getting into the Grand Arena, shows we need a bigger space and auditorium for our events.
(3) Security was loose. Looks like we didn’t learn from the 2019 experience. For those who used the VIP/VVIP route, you only scanned your ticket, and the gate opened for you. No thorough checks!
(4) Performers tried to up their game this year by investing some more in props and concept. The setting up took away some time but it bodes well for our industry.
(5) Romanus’ initial punchlines were solid. I wish he centred his jokes more on music. Even if he wanted to do politics, it should have been about quite recent stuff that could hit some humour buds. I know sometimes due to production issues, you might need to improvise and do a lot of off-script delivery. Foster tried but could have done better. Plus, his coordination with AJ was a bit jarring.
(6) Sound in the auditorium was great. I don’t know about TV and online.
(7) We still need to check the crass attitude of artistes ‘follow-backs’ always speaking into the mic after the artiste is done delivering his/her acceptance speech. Normalise putting their mics off.
(8) Was the red carpet really STRICTLY by invitation?
(9) The organisers are being smart by tapping into the Gen Z’s audience. If you are uncomfortable seeing these young TikTok stars on the red carpet or at the event, brace yourself up for more in the coming years. . There is a big audience online so any strategic business person would want to tap into the drivers of that community.
(10) Fact is, TGMA is the only proper [music] award scheme we have in Ghana and one of the best on the continent. We will criticise them when they go wrong but we can’t rob them off their sterling achievements over the years.
